More than 50 entries for Purbrook Horticultural Society virtual summer show now on display online

Growers, bakers and artists who joined in with Purbrook Horticultural Society’s virtual summer show can now see their hard work on the society’s website - proving the show must go on.

When chairman Lynda Piddington challenged members to contribute to the virtual offering, she was surprised by the quality of the more than 50 entries.

Among the usual categories of vegetables, pot plants, floral arrangement, baking and flowers, Lynda was even more shocked to see member Mark Ward had grown some bananas.

The competition, which was just for fun to fill lockdown hours, showed how resourceful and adaptable the gardeners could be.

Lynda said: ‘I am so delighted that members have embraced technology and found productive and enjoyable ways to fill their time when not able to attend the usual monthly meetings.’

She added: ‘Members have said they are so blessed to have even a little space to tend which has helped their physical and mental wellbeing and that the weather was on our side was a bonus.

‘Some of members have realised they now have the time to either rediscover a hobby or discover a new one and so to show their efforts boosted confidence and morale.’
