One casualty confirmed as firefighters scrambled to Gosport house fire in The Redan

Firefighters from across the region have been called to The Redan in Gosport after a home caught fire around an hour ago.

A spokesman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Gosport, Fareham, Cosham and Portchester crews were called at 3pm to a property fire in The Redan, Gosport.

‘The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service Control Room received numerous calls reporting smoke issuing from both sides of a first-floor flat and the aerial ladder platform has been sent from Southsea.

‘One casualty is being treated by South Central Ambulance Service paramedics as firefighters work to prevent fire spreading to the roof of the property.

‘Crews are tackling the blaze using breathing apparatus, hose reels and jets.’

A total of six fire appliances and 30 firefighters were deployed from Gosport, Fareham, Wickham and Southsea,

Group manager Andy Lock from Fareham Fire Station confirmed a male casualty was rescued from the upstairs flat and has now been taken to hospital.

He said: ‘We were alerted by a passer-by who was smoke coming from the building.

‘The fire had spead to the roof space and we had to evacuate 10 nearby flats.

‘The occupants are still unable to return to their homes until we make sure the area is safe. The fire service and police are working together to establish the cause of the fire.’

One police officer at the scene added: ‘We are still investigating the cause of the fire.

‘We had to evacuate several flats and are working with the counicl to find somwhere for these residents to stay.’
