Members of Gosport U3A will be showcasing a range of their activities and interest groups in a bid to attract more people to join in with the fun.

The University of the Third Age is for anyone retired or semi-retired who would like to get out, make some friends and take part in activities which they enjoy.

As the members of the charity’s Gosport branch will be celebrating a quarter of a century on July 1, they have a year of special events ahead which will kick off with the open day on March 7 from 10am until 2pm at the Search building in High Street.

Entertainment from 11am will include the dance group performing, as well as other performances from the folk group, ukelele players and the swing band.

Chairman Pat Humphris is very passionate about the U3A and wants to encourage more members to join the 385 already enrolled.

Pat, 64, said: ‘It’s good for people to stop all this social isolation, you make so many friends and that’s what it’s really all about.’

Pat moved to the town three years ago after becoming a widow, and joined the group soon after taking early retirement.

‘Life’s just taken off, it’s just so lovely,’ she said.

‘It’s a big thing to move after 21 years in one place, U3A is a good thing to join. You start making friends and doing things outside as well - I have no regrets.’

Set up by three friends in their homes in 1995, the group has gone from strength to strength over the years and Pat has booked a special treat for the anniversary: a four-hour cruise on the Gosport Ferry in July.

Each interest group will be planning their own special celebration to mark the organisation’s 25th birthday, including the gardening group which is planning a garden party and the walking group which is spending a weekend away in Swanage.
