Pair flee scene empty handed after attempted dog robbery in Gosport as walker uses leash to hit man pointing knife and demanding the victim hand pooch over

A DOG owner fought off a would-be animal thief who was armed with a knife – by using his pet’s leash.

Police are now appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information about the incident, to come forward.

The victim was walking a dog along the alleyway behind Sedgley Grove in Gosport between 1pm and 2.30pm on Thursday.

A van, a new-style white Transit, entered the alleyway from Chantry Road and pulled up alongside the victim.

Two men jumped out of the rear of the vehicle, one pointing a knife at the victim, making threats and demanding he hand the dog over.

The man with the knife is described as Asian, aged 25 to 35, with short dark hair and wearing dark coloured tracksuit.

His companion was also described as Asian, with short dark hair, and wearing a dark coloured tracksuit and Adidas trainers.

The victim took one of the two dog leads off the dog, and began swinging it around at the men until it hit the one with the knife, making him drop the weapon.

It was then picked up by the other man, and the two ran back to the van empty-handed.

The van, also driven by someone police say was described as Asian, sped off towards Rydal Road.
