Police officer taken to hospital after three-car pile up near Portsmouth Naval Base

A FEMALE police officer involved in a three-car pile-up outside Portsmouth Naval Base has been taken to hospital.

The officer’s response car was mangled following a collision with two other vehicles at the Mile End Road junction with the M275 at 10.19am.

Her car smashed into the metal barrier of the traffic lights near the naval base, causing serious damage to the front of the patrol vehicle.

A black BMW, which appeared to have been rear-ended, also smashed through the metal railings in the crash.

Hampshire police said that a third vehicle, a Mercedes, was caught up in the pile-up – which blocked part of the M275.

Hampshire Constabulary has not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the crash.

But a spokeswoman for the force told The News: ‘The female officer who was driving the police vehicle has been taken to hospital as a precaution and another driver is suspected to have whiplash injuries.

‘Two of the cars have been recovered and the road is now open. No further details are available currently.’

Paramedics, along with firefighters, attended the emergency.

Royal Navy police from the naval base supported by diverting traffic from the M275.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact them by calling 101 and quoting reference 44210005564.
