This Portsmouth bookworm, age seven, has read almost 200 books this summer
“He’s quite literally always got his head in a book.”
A young bookworm is on the cusp of reading more than 200 books over the course of a summer reading challenge.
Joseph Mitchell, from Stamshaw, has been an avid reader his entire life, diving headfirst into as many different stories as he can get his hands on.
Last summer, he read 101 books over the summer holidays, raising £251 for The Reading Agency, a charity that promotes reading for all ages, regardless of age or economic background. This year, Joseph wanted to double his efforts, and reach 202 books.

At the time of publication, the seven-year-old has read a staggering 192 books this summer, and shows no signs of slowing down before the Summer Reading Challenge deadline of September 13.
Joseph’s mother, Janet Mitchell, said: “On a normal day he might read three or four books. He’ll read on the bus, on the way to his swimming lessons, or while waiting for our food to be ready at the local chippy - he’s quite literally always got his head in a book.
“If he’s had a busy day, he finds the books a great way to escape and wind down. Even though it’s a reading challenge, we can see how beneficial it is to him.”
By reading so many books, it’s understandable how Joseph has been able to discover new favourites. In terms of series, Dog Man and Captain Underpants have been popular choices this summer, with Dav Pilkey quickly becoming one of his favourite authors.
As Joseph begins his first term at Stamshaw Junior School, he has also started reading the Sherlock Holmes books, as well as delving into the Famous Five.

His interest in the former was sparked by a trip to the library, when there was a Sherlock-themed Victorian arts and crafts event.
“If he gets a new favourite type of book, he will want to read the whole series,” Janet said. “He loves going to the library, and that whole experience. We’ve been to every library in the city, and usually end up coming away with dozens of books each time. A few days later, we’re heading back for a brand new bunch of books.
“Everyone at the library has been so lovely and supportive, especially at our local library in North End - they just go above and beyond for Joseph.”
As with last year, Joseph is fundraising again for The Reading Agency. To donate to his fundraiser, people can click this link.
