Supermarket yogurt recalled over contamination fears

TWO top-selling yogurts have been recalled due to them potentially containing pieces of plastic.

Sainsbury’s has recalled a batch of its own-brand Strawberry Fromage Frais after it was discovered that a batch may contain pieces of blue plastic - a possible choking hazard.

The firm issued a notice recalling Strawberry Fromage Frais Pouches with a use by date of 7 May. The 90g pouches are sold in packs of four.

A statement from Sainsbury’s read: ‘As a precautionary measure, we are asking all customers who have bought this product to return them to their nearest Sainsbury’s store, where they will receive a full refund.

‘No other products or date codes are affected by this issue and we apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.’

Dairy giants Müller recalled a batch of their Kids Corner Butterflies Strawberry Yogurt on the same weekend as it was discovered that there could potentially be a ‘small plastic puck shaped disk’ contained within a pot from the batch.

The 135g Kids Corner yogurts are sold in packs of four, and the affected batch is dated 27 April 2016.

A statement from Müller read: “Müller Yogurt & Desserts is recalling a batch of its four pack Müller Kids Corner Butterflies Strawberry yogurt. This is a precautionary measure.

‘The action is being taken because of the potential presence of a small puck shaped disc in one pot of yogurt from the batch. The disc is pink in colour and measures 3cm by 1cm and is used to test systems on our production line which are in place to protect product quality.

‘The batch was manufactured at our facility in Market Drayton, Shropshire and with the exception of the single pot which contains the disc it should be stressed that all other pots from the batch are unaffected and entirely safe to eat.

‘This is an isolated incident, and an extensive investigation by Müller Yogurt & Desserts Quality Team is under way.’

Both firms urge customers not to consume the products. Sainsbury’s advise that anyone who has purchased the affected Fromage Frais pouches should return the product to their nearest Sainsbury’s store for a full refund. Müller asks affected customers to contact the customer services team at [email protected].
