The Lord John Russell in Southsea was packed out as England fans witnessed a historic victory as the Three Lions defeated Mexico 3-2 in the round of 16 of the World Cup.
Hardy fans flocked to the pub on Albert Road on Monday, July 6 despite the fact that a severe weather delay led to the game being pushed back an hour with kick off at 2am. It was well worth the wait as Thomas Tuchel’s men put in a battling performance to knock out the co-hosts despite being down to ten men for much of the second half, following Jarell Quansah’s red card.
The rollercoaster of a game was sealed by a first half brace from Jude Bellingham and a second half penalty from Harry Kane as the Three Lions showed their dogged defensive side holding out through an agonising 11 minutes of added time.
Fans at the Lord John Russell kicked and headed every ball as they were put through the wringer. At the final whistle there was a release of joy as England head to the quarter-finals becoming the first team to beat Mexico in a competitive match at the Azteca Stadium since 2013.
