Tributes paid to Sean Connery, famed for playing James Bond, who has died aged 90
The Scot - who served in the Royal Navy before turning to acting – was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.
His acting career spanned decades and his many awards included an Oscar, two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes.

Hide AdSir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.
He was pictured at Hilsea Lido aged 18, in 1949, while attending a three-month gunnery course at HMS Excellent, and went on to be an Able Seaman in HMS Formidable, before being discharged the following year on medical grounds because of a duodenal ulcer.
His Oscar came in 1988, when he was named best supporting actor for his role as an Irish cop in The Untouchables, and he was knighted in 2000.
Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli paid tribute to Sir Sean Connery in a statement: ‘We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sir Sean Connery.
