Two women rescued from mud near Hilsea had been out kayaking, fire crew confirms

A major operation was launched last night to rescue the pair who became stuck near to the M275 and Mountbatten Centre.
Fire crews from Cosham and Southsea, coastguard teams and the ambulance service were alerted at about 8.30pm and spent two hours bringing the women back to dry land.

Hide AdA Cosham Fire Station spokesman said they had been kayaking in the water but had become stuck in mud when the tide went out.
Coming from the Hilsea side, two crew members from the coastguard trudged more than 200m through thick mud and were able to winch back the pair on a dinghy.
The Hill Head coastguard team shared photos of the operation on Twitter, showing the two rescuers wading through the mud near to the motorway.
The two women were able to walk unaided once they back at the shore, and were checked over by paramedics.
No hospital treatment was required.

Hide AdOne onlooker told The News last night: ‘I’m really glad the emergency services have been able to get them out.
‘I hope they’re okay.’
GAFIRS – the Gosport and Fareham lifeboat service – also provided cover during the operation.
