Steve Silvester, 34, from Waterlooville, started his building business in October 2020 after previously working as a contracts manager.

With his team of eight, including his brother who was made redundant during the pandemic, the company offers a range of services including driveways and patios

Since starting the business, Steve has completed around 35 projects.

Among these he helped a former school friend whose son was diagnosed with cancer.

Steve said: ‘A friend of mine from school, his little boy got diagnosed with cancer on the liver, he’s 16 months old now.

‘They’d just moved into a place a couple of months back and we went round with some school friends and we did it for free for them.’

The business is family-run, with Steve’s wife Victoria helping with admin and his two children, seven-year-old Penny and 10-year-old Vincent, coming along to jobs with him to help where they can.

He said: ‘My two kids enjoy coming along at the weekends to help out a bit. I do it all for them, it’s just to put food on the table for the family.’

After working in the industry all his life, Steve said he aims to offer good quality services at a fair price, and is always willing to give advice to people even if they don’t want to go ahead with it.

He said: ‘I’d like to think we do a good quality job at a fair price, I’m always here to help with advice even if they don’t go with me.

‘I like to think I’m quite approachable with giving advice to what would be best suited to them.’

Since the pandemic, Steve has noticed that a lot more people want to have work done on their homes while at the same time want to support small businesses.

He said: ‘Even with the family at home over lockdown we’ve been buying local, trying to use local people so it’s kind of hit home a bit more.

‘If I do a job for someone, you’re not paying for my second home, you’re helping us save for a family holiday to create memories.’
