The 70-strong Cowbridge Welsh Male Voice Choir is putting on the concert at Thorngate Hall from 6-9pm on Saturday, October 29 to help Community Spirit, a supported volunteering group coordinated by local charity Gosport Voluntary Action (GVA).

The group is made up of local adults with disabilities or mental health struggles. Despite these challenges, the members have come together to help others in the community by volunteering their time on a range of projects which include litter picking, serving meals for homeless people and gardening.

But the group’s particular passion is its allotment, which gives the members hours of fun and helps them to build friendships whilst growing their own vegetables.

However, the group needs basic tools like trowels, wheel barrows and watering cans. All funds raised from concert ticket sales will go directly towards the purchase of new tools and materials for the allotment.

Kay Hallsworth, CEO at GVA, said: ‘Gosport Voluntary Action plays a vital role in supporting the community organisations within Gosport and works closely with all of them. As part of that engagement, we also deliver essential services to support those who are vulnerable, disabled and those who need additional support.

‘Community Spirit is a small group that engages with the most vulnerable in our town and allows them to feel a part of Gosport. It gives them self-confidence, allows them to build friendships, learn new skills and to give back a little in their own way. They are at the heart of what we try to deliver in the community and any support we can get for them to allow them to develop further is extremely important.’

A spokesperson from the choir said: ‘We are only too happy to help Community Spirit raise the funds they need; sometimes in life, it is nice to give back. It will be an evening of exciting songs given by a choir of a few, for the entertainment of so many.’

To buy tickets at £15 for adults, £10 for children, go to gva.org.uk, or contact Miriam Selman, GVA community engagement coordinator, on [email protected].

They can also be bought in person from the GVA offices in Martin Snape House, Gosport.
