The coastguard said it was called out at 7am today to the stricken animal, which was on the Southampton Road shoreline.

A team from British Divers Marine Life Rescue was called out as well.

A spokesman for the coastguard service confirmed the creature – believed to be a Sowerby’s beaked whale, according to BDMLR – had died. It was about the size of a porpoise.
