A spokeswoman for the police said: ‘Officers are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances of the collision and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed it or saw the vehicle prior to the incident.’

It is understood Mr Walton’s car crashed into the barrier separating the sliproad, at Purbrook, with the main carriageway.

Roads policing officers shut the road for more than four hours to investigate the cause of the crash.

Police believe that no other vehicle was involved in the crash and they kept the slip road closed until after 9am on the day in order to carry out the crash investigation.
