BREXIT POLL: How our readers voted

Nearly 75 per cent of people also do not trust the government to deliver the best deal for the country during the upcoming Brexit negotiations.

The figures come from an online poll run by The News, in which we asked readers what they thought of the UK’s decision to leave the union.

It comes after Parliament voted in favour of triggering Article 50, which starts the formal process of exiting the EU.

Our survey also shows only 30 per cent of people are still in support of the Leave campaign, down from 33 per cent who admitted voting to leave in the referendum.

These figures come despite voters in the Portsmouth area choosing overwhelmingly to leave the European Union in last year’s referendum.

Voters also chose the economy as their biggest priority during the negotiations (55 per cent).

Freedom of travel for UK citizens was chosen by 18 per cent, with 13 per cent voting for immigration and the freedom to control our own laws.

Readers on our Facebook also gave their opinions on the negotiations.

Brent Cotgrave said: ‘I voted to stay but I truly believe in democracy so I would vote out, as that was the majority vote the first time.

‘A second vote would be a mockery of the British public.’

Andi Bambeck commented: ‘I was on the fence and voted remain. Probably would again, but now it’s over and let’s get on with Brexit. Kinda anxious/excited about the future and how it all turns out.’

And Rick Kirk said: ‘Out every time. If there was another referendum, more people would vote out than ever!’

There was a huge swing in our results over the weekend, with 59 per cent of people at one point on Friday saying that they were in favour of leaving the European Union.

In last year’s referendum, 58 per cent of people in Portsmouth voted opted to leave the European Union.

In Fareham, 55 per cent voted to leave, 62 per cent opted out in Gosport, and 62 per cent voted the same way in Havant.

But 50.5 per cent of people in East Hampshire voted to remain, compared to 49.48 choosing to leave.

More than 4,200 answered at least one question on the survey. Results above were as the poll stood at 1pm 06/02/17.
