Council uses technologyto keep county moving

Hampshire County Council has put in sensors to roadside gullies to provide data on factors which affect flooding on the roads, such as silt and water levels, and will combine this with forecasts.

As well as the new sensors, a new fleet of gully emptiers has hit the highways network to ensure drains and gullies are ready. These machines can suck silt from up to 30m deep and jet 100m long pipelines.

Cllr Rob Humby, executive member for environment, said: ‘Keeping Hampshire moving so people can get to work and school as usual, whatever the weather, is our priority. ’

The work of the fleet complements the inspections, clearing and maintenance carried out on Hampshire’s 60,000 gullies and 4,600 catchpits throughout the year.
