Decision over Portsmouth Kingston Prison redevelopment to be made next week

COUNCILLORS are set to examine plans to turn the former Kingston Prison estate in Portsmouth into housing.

Developer City & Country has submitted plans to the city council to convert the old prison building and gatehouse, off Milton Road, into 73 new homes.

The firm also wants to build five new residential blocks ranging in height between three and seven storeys to create 157 flats.

The council’s planning committee will go over a report into the proposal before deciding whether to give the scheme the green light at a special committee meeting on Wednesday, July 6. Sixty-eight objections have been submitted to the council, including from Lib Dem ward councillor Darren Sanders and the Portsmouth Society.

They say the proposal is ‘ugly’ and ‘at odds’ with the historic prison buildings.
