Extinction Rebellion demonstration in Portsmouth cancelled this weekend due to tier three restrictions

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners have been forced to postpone a demonstration due to new coronavirus restrictions.

The Southsea branch of Extinction Rebellion (XR) have scrapped a planned protest outside the Barclays Bank in Commercial Road, in Portsmouth, which was due to take place tomorrow (Saturday 19).

Selma Heimedinger, from XR Southsea, said: 'As Portsmouth has been put into tier three, this action is postponed until next year when it is safe for us to protest.'

The group had claimed the British company is adding to the climate crisis by investing in fossil fuels.

Selma added: ‘By investing in environmentally destructive projects, Barclays are fuelling the climate crisis, and using everyday people’s money to do so.

People deserve to know that their bank is fuelling climate disaster- climate chaos which will impact on children’s future living conditions. They deserve a better option.'

Tier three restrictions come into effect in Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant on Saturday, December 19.
