Fareham MP calls for restoration works to start on Fort Fareham

CALLS have been made for restoration works to start on Fort Fareham.

Fareham MP Suella Fernandes has renewed her plea for action to be taken to restore the building and has raised the issue with the government.

Built in 1861, the fort is classified as priority ‘A’ by Historic England meaning it is at immediate risk of further rapid deterioration and no solution has been agreed.

Ownership of the site is divided between private owners.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Miss Fernandes highlighted the issue, asking what support can be provided to heritage assets at risk of rapid deterioration, particularly those in private ownership.

The culture minister David Evennett said Historic England is working with partners to make the most of Portsmouth Harbour’s history.

Miss Fernandes has discussed the future of Fort Fareham with representatives of Heritage England, and has been in discussions about ways of restoring the site.
