Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond campaigned to remain in the EU during the recent referendum campaign.

She said: ‘The judgement from the High Court was clear and now it is for the Government to respond.

‘Much will be made on what this means over the next few days but, for me, there are simply two issues here: Brexit supporters have to respect the judgement and the rule of law, while Remainers must respect the outcome of the referendum.

‘Parliament and Government, with the help of the courts, now needs to quickly find a way forward to balance these two issues for the good of the country.’

Havant MP Alan Mak, who also supported the Remain campaign, said: ‘We have to accept the country voted to leave the EU in a referendum already approved by an Act of Parliament.

‘The Government is determined to respect the result of the referendum, and they are appealing today’s judgment, so we now await the Supreme Court’s decision.’

Following the ruling a Government spokesman said: ‘The Government is disappointed by the Court’s judgment.

‘The country voted to leave the European Union in a referendum approved by Act of Parliament.
