Hundreds of EU citizens in Portsmouth lose bid for settled status after Brexit

HALF of around 9,000 European Union citizens living in Portsmouth have been granted a permanent right to remain in Britain.

Out of 8,940 applications for settled status made up to the end of last year, 4,510 applicants were given permanent security.

But 3,520 were handed pre-settled status, which gives them permission to keep living in the country and the chance to reapply once they have done so for five years.

So far 8,080 applications have been decided.

The rest of the applications – 940 – had other outcomes, such as being refused, with drawn or void, or invalid.​

The EU Settlement Scheme allows resident EU and Swiss citizens, plus those from the European Economic Area countries to apply to continue living and working in the UK after Brexit. The government said it has received more than 3 million applications so far.

But EU citizens’ rights campaign group the3million said even a small percentage of individuals missing out means misery for thousands.

More than 3m EU citizens have applied to live and work in the UK after Brexit, according to the Home Office, and more than 2.7 million have been granted permission to remain.

In Havant, 830 applicants out of 1,430 were given settled status. In Fareham, 750 people won settled status out of 1,170 applications, while in Gosport 620 got settled status out of 930 bids.

In the Winchester council area 2,050 applications were made, with 1,210 people given settled status.
