'˜I'll quit over Corbyn'

LOCAL Labour party leader John Ferrett has said he will quit if Jeremy Corbyn stays as national leader.

Cllr Ferrett, who represents Paulsgrove on Portsmouth City Council, said he could not continue in his role as Portsmouth’s group leader if Corbyn stays as leader.

He said he was particularly upset as Corbyn voted against renewing Trident.

Cllr Ferrett said: ‘I cannot advocate people voting for Labour if Jeremy Corbyn remains as leader.

‘For me it is now or never. Even the parliamentary party has come to the similar view, hence the vote of no confidence.

‘Given what happened with Trident, I believe the first duty of a Prime Minister should be to protect the country and he made it clear he wants to undermine national security.’

He said that Corbyn had ‘split the Labour party in two’.

He added: ‘If our system is to function correctly then we need an effective opposition and with Corbyn in charge we don’t have that.’
