New road signs to be installed outside Portsmouth nursery after fifth crash in a year

Hampshire police were called to a collision involving two cars outside the Dysart Nursery in Drayton, Portsmouth, last weekend.

According to Drayton ward councillor, Simon Bosher, the incident - in which one person suffered minor injuries - was the fifth since the start of last year.

Now warning signs will be put up along the accident hotspot on the junction of Tregaron Avenue and Mansvid Avenue.

Portsmouth City Council's traffic and transport boss, Councillor Lynne Stagg, said: 'We make every effort to address concerns about traffic within the city. These are investigated and we then prioritise our resources on the areas with the greatest need.

'The junction of Tregaron Avenue, Mansvid Avenue and Dysart Road was identified in our prioritisation exercise.

'The recent incident has increased the priority of this area, and we will being putting "give way" and "crossing ahead" signs at this junction as soon as possible.'

Speaking about the incident, a spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: 'We were called to a collision involving two vehicles at the junction of Tregaron Avenue an Mansvid Avenue just before 4pm on Saturday, January 9.

'Officers attended and one person reported minor injuries.

'No arrests were made.'

It comes after Cllr Bosher, who is also the Conservative spokesman for transport at the council, predicted more accidents could happen at the intersection unless something was done.

He said: 'There have been four serious accidents at this junction in the last year, one of which seriously injured a young pedestrian.

'There is a nursery on this junction and it is a popular route to Court Lane schools, so I am delighted that the council has finally recognised my concerns.'

During a traffic meeting in December a decision was made to implement road safety measures outside the Rainbow Corner Day Nursery in Southsea following a spate of crashes.

This was then prioritised further after a car collided with the nursery wall the following day.

The council said temporary changes including cones and high visibility pedestrian barriers will remain in place outside the Rainbow nursery until permanent features are installed.
