Executive member for leisure and community at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sue Bell, said: ‘I’m pleased that, despite the challenges we are facing, this project can still move ahead.

‘This new facility will be a great asset to Fareham, replacing the current one which has become tired and dated. While we can’t enjoy arts and entertainment activities at the moment, when we can do these things again, residents can look forward to a fantastic new venue in the town centre.’

The venue closed in January and will be shut for two years while the redevelopment takes place. The council offered to help staff find new roles.

The purpose-built centre was opened by the Duchess of Kent on April 23, 1982, and stars including Lenny Henry, Jack Dee and Jo Brand all started their careers with a visit to the venue.
