Plans to build a three-bed flat by extending a Southsea seafront building are to be considered

At a virtual Portsmouth planning committee next week councillors are set to vote on proposals to extend Park House, in Clarence Parade.

If approved the extension will create a new three-bedroom dwelling on the roof of the existing building, which is divided up into various apartments.

Applicants Jason West and his son Rowan, who have lived in the building for eight years, said they hope to build an 'aesthetically pleasing, sustainable' home.

60-year-old Jason said: 'We wanted to do this because we felt a lot of space was being wasted on the roof.

'It's criminal how we keep building on the outskirts of our town when spaces like this are going to waste.

'As part of the build the insulation will be from recycled materials, the plasterboard will be eco-friendly and the floors will be made from sustainable oak.

'When it is done the plan is one of us will move in there.'

The application has received 26 letters of support from neighbours and one objection.

Khalid Saleh, who lives in the building, said: 'In my opinion the proposed design will provide a positive impact to the frontage of Park House and the surrounding neighbourhood.

'It appears consistent in proportion and form to previously completed high quality extensions to the roof-scape of Park House and I am fully in support of this project.'

And Matthew Northeast, who lives in nearby Clarence Road, added: 'This proposed rooftop extension will provide a good balance to the external appearance of Park House without detracting from its overall appearance.'

However, Park House resident Cat Greatbanks said: Although the proposed materials appear to be the same, I don't feel that the form of the proposed front facade manages to balance the building very well and the shape of the roof-line does not reflect that of the already developed left hand side.

'I feel that this is quite a dominant proposal and could overshadow the rest of the facade.'

A decision on the application will be made on Tuesday, February 23.
