Praise for firms that support governors in Hampshire

COMPANIES have been thanked for encouraging their workers to volunteer as school governors by handing out honours.

More than 30 employees received their Governor Services Employer Awards from Hampshire County Council’s executive member for education Cllr Peter Edgar at a presentation in Winchester.

Firms thanked included CVM Ltd in Fareham, BAE Systems Maritime Services in Portsmouth and SSE in Havant.

Cllr Edgar said: ‘School governors play a vital role in driving school improvement, so it’s important to give businesses the public recognition that they deserve.

‘Without their employer’s encouragement and flexibility many governors would not be able to take on governor duties and schools would miss out on the varied skills and perspectives they provide.

Employers also benefit from the skills that governors can bring back into their workplace, through their experiences as well as the extensive training that is provided by governor services.’
