A stretch of flood protection by the naval memorial in Southsea has now been reinstated after part of it was washed away earlier this year, however, resurfacing works on the promenade have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a tweet the Southsea Coastal Scheme said: 'Repair work by the naval memorial is now complete and protection from coastal flooding reinstated.

'As resurfacing of the promenade still needs to be undertaken (but is non-essential in the current circumstances) the site remains fenced off until it is safe to return.'

The defences by the memorial had already been noted for repair work last year before Storm Brendan in January damaged them further.

They are due to receive a complete upgrade when work to replace the defences from Long Curtain Moat to Eastney is completed as part of a £131m scheme.

The new defences were granted planning application by Portsmouth City Council in December last year.

The seafront road that runs alongside the defences is closed during weekends and bank holidays to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
