Residents invited to view plans for next phase of Southsea coastal defences

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2027 and finish in 2028

Southsea’s seafront is set for another major transformation, with residents invited to see plans before work begins next year.

Residents are being invited to view the latest plans for a major phase of Southsea’s coastal defences, with construction due to begin next spring.

Work on Frontage 6, which covers the seafront between South Parade Pier and St George’s Road, is expected to start in spring 2027 and finish in late summer 2028.

Two public engagement events will be held later this month, giving residents, businesses and visitors the chance to view the designs, find out how the work will be carried out and speak to the project team.

The sessions will take place at CourtX, Eastern Parade, Southsea, on Friday, October 23, from 3pm to 7pm, and Saturday, October 24, from 12pm to 4pm.

Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “The Southsea Coastal Scheme is not only about providing the flood protection our city needs for the future, but making sure we create a seafront that people can continue to enjoy for generations to come.

“Frontage 6 is the next major step in that work. We know construction on this scale will affect people who live, work, visit and travel through the area, which is why we want to explain the plans well before work begins.

“I’d encourage people to come along, take a look at what is planned and speak to the teams about both the coastal works and the wider plans for this part of the seafront.”

Frontage 6 will extend improvements to the seafront eastwards from South Parade Pier, combining new flood defences with upgrades to the promenade.

Plans include a raised and resurfaced promenade, improved walking and cycling routes, upgraded road and pedestrian crossings, new lighting and additional seating.

Stretching 4.5km along the seafront, the Southsea Coastal Scheme is designed to reduce the risk of flooding to more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses, providing protection for the city over the next 100 years.

No booking is required, and visitors can drop in at any time during either session.
