Over the weekend American President Donald Trump announced he intends to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (IRNFT) with Russia. 

The US President also revealed his intentions to develop new ballistic missiles '“ raising fears of a new arms race and even World War 3.

The landmark IRNF treaty, signed by America and Russia in 1987, eliminated all nuclear and conventional missiles, as well as their launchers, with ranges of 500'“1,000 kilometres (310'“620 mi) (short-range) and 1,000'“5,500 km (620'“3,420 mi).

Speaking in a press conference this week President Putin warned of a '˜new arms race' in a press conference. 

While relations between the former Cold War rivals have had frosty relations of late as Russia has been accused of meddling in American elections '“ the chances of WW3 remain extremely slim.

Although the Doomsday Clock, which tracks the possibility of the end of the World, is at two minutes to midnight, the closest approach to midnight, matching that of 1953. 

Portsmouth was one of the targets on a Russian hit list for nuclear strikes in event of WW3 during the Cold War, The News revealed earlier this year. 

And Putin has warned that the deployment of US intermediate-range missiles in Europe would force Russia to target the nations hosting them.

Mr Putin rejected Mr Trump's claim that Russia breached the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. He alleged it was the United States that violated the agreement.

Mr Putin says he hopes to discuss the issue with Mr Trump in Paris on the sideline of November 11 events marking 100 years since Armistice Day.
