Poppy Appeal launches across Portsmouth

HUNDREDS of people across the Portsmouth region pledged to help support armed forces veterans and remember those who died in battle as the Poppy Appeal launched this weekend.

At Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth the deputy Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Councillor David Fuller was handed the first poppy of the remembrance period.

Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan, who attended the ceremony in Gunwharf, said: 'Sunday, November 11 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War.

'So it is only fitting that this year we specifically say thank you to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.'

Ex-Royal Navy serviceman Steve Thomas said: 'It's always good to launch the Poppy Appeal '“ this is a very important year and we hope that people will wear their poppies with pride.

'˜This year is particularly important, so we need people's help more than ever before.'

Later, Cllr Fuller was at Tesco North Harbour with army cadets, police cadets and Cllr Frank Jonas helping launch the appeal in Cosham.

Cllr Jonas said: 'This is the true Portsmouth spirit and the city at its best.

'It is amazing how many businesses and residents get involved in this important cause.'
