Portsmouth city centre road to be closed for six weeks for roadworks

A city centre street in Portsmouth has been closed for up to six weeks while roadworks take place.

Stanhope Road, which is near Portsmouth and Southsea train station, is shut southbound from October 8 to October 20.

The northbound route will then close from October 21 to November 16.

The route is being shut to allow for utility connections for the new Travelodge hotel being built on the road.

Diversions will be in place during the closure.

Drivers travelling southbound will be directed via Alfred Road, Anglesea Road, St Michaels Road, King Richard 1st Rosad, Winston Churchill Avenue and Isambard Brunel Road.

Those travelling northbound will go via Station Street, Arundel Street, Holbrook Road, Winston Churchill Avenue, Lord Montgomery Way, Hampshire Terrace, St Michaels Road, Anglesea Road, Alfred Road, Marketway, Hope Street and Unicorn Road. 

The closures will be in place for six weeks or until the works are completed, depending on which comes sooner.
