MOBILITY scooters crashed more times in Portsmouth than in any other local authority.

Six incidents were reported to police last year, according to data obtained by British mapping firm Mapmechanics.

Portsmouth is ahead of East Riding in Yorkshire, which saw five crashes, in the league table and East Lindsey in Lincolnshire, also with five.

David Cockrell, director of Mapmechanics, said: ‘The use of mobility scooters is only likely to grow as the Baby Boomer Generation moves into old age and with rising levels of obesity across all generations affecting personal mobility.

‘We’re likely to see more people with little road craft awareness of scooters on pavements and roads so accidents may continue to increase.’
