Power cut affects 12,000 homes after explosion

MORE than 10,000 homes across Portsmouth were left without power following reports of an explosion at a electricity sub-station.

Energy firm SSE has confirmed 12,789 properties saw their electricity go down at 5.02pm today after a fault at a power centre in Medina Road, Wymering.

The loss of power lasted for two minutes, and engineers are now at the sub-station to investigate what happened.

An SSE spokesman said: ‘I can confirm that 12,789 properties were without power from 5.02pm until 5.04pm as a result of a trip at a substation in Medina Road.

Engineers have attended the scene to investigate as there were reports of a loud bang and smoke around that time.
