Ola Ayeni, 39, works at Tesco in Whiteley Shopping Centre, and won the Customer Service award in The News Retail & Leisure Awards, held in September.

He was praised by local resident Hannah Jackson for his contribution to her daughter’s birthday.

Ms Jackson said: ‘It was my daughter’s 15th birthday, and we went into Tesco to pick out a birthday cake.

‘Because she has Asperger’s, going to the supermarket is something that is never on her to-do list.

‘She has also recently been refused entry into the RAF, so has been a feeling a little low as of late.

‘She came in wearing her birthday badge, and Ola came up and sang happy birthday to her.

‘He gave her a card and some chocolates, then spoke to her about her dreams for the future, and that she can achieve anything she sets her mind to if her heart desires.

‘It was a random act of kindness but it really made her day. It’s done so much for her and I don’t know how I can thank him enough.’

‘He truly is one of life’s special gems.’
