A special school has had to temporarily close

Flooding caused by a water pump failure has forced a specialist academy to temporarily close.

Mary Rose Academy's Compass campus has confirmed it will be temporarily closed following a significant flooding incident caused by an unprecedented failure in the school's water pumping system.

The school, which is part of the Solent Academies Trust, is a specialist setting supporting children and young people with profound, severe and complex learning difficulties.

A spokesperson said the flooding has affected several central areas of the building and, as a result, there has been a loss of water and power to parts of the site. Advice from contractors and site specialists has led to the decision to close the campus while repairs and safety checks are completed.

This closure applies only to Compass Campus. Mary Rose Academy's Craneswater and The Lantern campuses remain open and operating as usual.

A spokesperson for Mary Rose Academy said: "We are very sorry for the disruption this unexpected incident will cause to our pupils, families and staff. The safety and wellbeing of our school community must come first.

“Our teams are working tirelessly to restore the site and we will reopen the campus as soon as it is safe to do so. We are incredibly grateful for the patience, understanding and support of our families during this challenging time.

“We would also like to express our sincere thanks to our colleagues at Meon Junior School, who have kindly opened their site to enable us to deliver as many of our end-of-year events as possible.

“Our mantra of 'It's got to be possible' is at the forefront of our minds as we navigate providing the best possible end to the school year for pupils attending our Compass Campus."

School staff and contractors have been working since the early hours of the morning to assess the damage and begin the recovery process.
