THE sun shone on Goodwood yesterday as tens of thousands of motorsport fans lapped up the action at the Festival of Speed.

Famous drivers including Brazilian F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi and Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle were among those getting behind the wheel of a spectacular array of racing machinery on the world-famous 1.16-mile hillclimb course near Chichester.

Meanwhile the Red Arrows also put on a lunchtime show for the big crowds, classic cars sold for millions of pounds at the Bonhams auction and rally aces slid sideways through a special forest stage.

Thursday’s rain meant car parks were still mudbaths and exotic supercars had to be towed out by tractors.

Today three-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was due to join the party, driving a 2014 Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid and meeting his army of fans.

Other famous faces expected over the weekend include Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Jenson Button, Nico Hulkenberg, Mark Webber, TV chef and car nut James Martin and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.
