Marwell Zoo 'working round the clock' to track down fugitive capybara Samba

Samba, the absconding capybara, has caused quite a stir across the country as Marwell Zoo continues working round the clock to locate her.

Samba - the ‘adventurous’ capybara - escaped her temporary holding having arrived from Jimmy's Farm & Wildlife Park in Essex with fellow companion, Tango, on Monday, March 16.

The alert was raised publicly on Thursday (March 19), and drone teams have been in operation as the search continues.

Over the weekend, Samba was spotted by a dog walker near the River Itchen, with a video released of her sunning herself. As a result, the team at Marwell have asked people to keep their eyes peeled in the Twyford and Brambridge areas.

The post added: “We have had several positive sightings over the last few days, all centred around the same area, so we feel we are closing in on her location.

“We have so far been unsuccessful in retrieving Samba, but it is a waiting game to catch sight of her again and then deploy our teams in getting her safely back home. We continue to work with drone teams and we are liaising with authorities in order to utilise humane traps around the area we believe she is in.

“We are relying on the public to keep sending us legitimate sightings of Samba so please ensure you send in a photo or video, along with your location to 07436 167401.”
