Portsmouth car fire was engine fault not lightning, say firefighters

A CAR caught fire in the street.

The incident happened in Ophir Road, North End on Saturday at about 1.15pm. The car’s engine caught fire when the driver attempted to start it.

Firefighters from Southsea were called to the scene. The fire caused severe damage to the Fiat’s engine. Nobody was hurt and the incident was over by 1.45pm.

A spokesman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the car had not been struck by lightning.
