Sewer pipe repair "going as planned" as Southern Water provide update one month into the Eastern Road closure

A £3 million sewer pipe repair which has left a section of the Eastern Road closed is “going as planned” one month into the work.

The southbound carriageway of the Eastern Road has been closed from Burrfields Road to Hayling Avenue since January 4. The water company has provided an update on the repair work with 1,649 metres of the sewer pipe now successfully lined.

A Southern Water spokesperson said: “Work to upgrade the sewer beneath Eastern Road is continuing as part of a £3 million investment to protect one of Portsmouth’s most important routes. So far, we’ve successfully lined 1,649 metres of the sewer pipe. We are currently working on reinstating the road.

“Progress can be affected by factors such as groundwater levels, access to specialist equipment and the time needed for repairs to cure safely underground. We’re working day and night, with much of it taking place below ground and out of sight.”

The spokesperson added: “Work was scheduled to last around eight weeks, subject to conditions, and are going as planned. We fully recognise the impact of the road closure and apologise for the inconvenience. We would like to thank residents and road users for their patience and understanding while these vital works continue.”
