Another man, 19, was also cut free after suffering a serious head injury and is in Southampton General Hospital. The driver, 20, also suffered serious injuries and he is in QA Hospital.

The drivers of a coach and an Iceland lorry helped to slow and then stop the traffic.

Tristan said: ‘I was talking to the coach driver as I know him, we used to work together.

‘He told me that he and the Iceland lorry had to bring traffic to a stop using their vehicles as cars continued to try and pass through even though the car was on its roof.

‘I don’t know how many but he was disgusted that people had done it.’

He added: ‘The coach and lorry helped the slow traffic to bring the motorway to a safe stop after seeing the accident.

‘Unbelievably there were still motorists that drove through the scene as they just wanted to get to where they needed to be.’
