UPDATE: Man flees through window to escape devastating caravan fire on Hayling Island

A MAN was forced to flee through a window after a caravan went up in flames on Hayling Island last night.

The man, who was treated by South Central Ambulance Service for a shoulder injury, was escaping the fire at the Hayling Island Holiday Park in Manor Road.

He was forced to escape through the window with a woman also fleeing the caravan after they realised it was on fire.

A total of 27 firefighters was battling the flames at the height of the fire with six appliances from Hayling, Cosham, Portchester, Havant and Eastleigh attending the scene at around 9.12pm.

A spokesperson for Havant fire station said: ‘We were called to the caravan park on Manor Road at around 9.12pm last night after reports of a caravan fire.

‘Two people, a man and a woman, were in the caravan at the time of our arrival.

‘They managed to escape, with the man having to get out of the caravan through a window.

‘He injured his shoulder in the process.’

Firefighters tackled the blaze at a 12-metre caravan using jets, breathing apparatus and one hose reel.

The crews were battling the flames for around three hours before standing down just after midnight this morning.
