M27 closures as Highways England continues smart motorway

DRIVERS are being warned about closures on the M27 as Highways England continue constructing the £244m smart motorway.

The agency warned people must plan ahead as overnight closures in both directions will take place.

This will happen between junction 4 for the M3 interchange and junction 11 for the Wallington interchange.

They will be between 9pm-6am starting tomorrow, March 1. The closures stop on March 21.

A Highways England statement said: ‘Road users are being reminded to plan ahead if they are intending on using the M27 in Hampshire next month month due to a series of overnight closures in both directions to allow essential work to take place.’

It added: ‘Drivers needing to use the M27 while the closures are in place are advised to plan ahead and leave extra time for their journeys.

All diversions will be fully signed, and closures are subject to change depending on operational requirements or adverse weather conditions.’

It comes as the House of Commons’ Transport Select Committee has started an inquiry into smart motorways following growing concerns about existing projects.
