Three police cars, an ambulance, Cosham firefighters and a hazardous response team all attended the scene.

A firefighter said: ‘There was just one vehicle that had gone into the central reservation - there was a lot of damage to the barrier.

‘No one was trapped and the couple were on the hard shoulder when we got there.’

The firefighter added: ‘The sun was low but the road was empty. I’m not sure how you crash your car when there are no other cars around?’
