DRIVERS on the M27 were facing five-mile queues due to a multiple-car crash that closed two lanes of the busy motorway this afternoon.

The collision between two vehicles near junction 5 caused lanes one and two of the M27 westbound to become blocked, with delays of up to an half an hour reported at 3.30pm today. The westbound carriageway is now clear and delays have eased.

Highways England earlier tweeted: ‘Please be aware there are long delays on the #M27 J7 #HedgeEnd to J5 #Stoneham…there is approximately five miles of congestion which is likely to add around 30 mins onto usual journey times.’

By 5pm the agency added: ‘M27 J7 Hedge End to J5 Stoneham, the westbound carriageway is now clear.’

Two people were extricated from the vehicles by fire crews at the scene, according to a spokeswoman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

She said: ‘We were called to an RTC between two vehicles earlier today.

‘A crew from High Town Fire Station and a crew from St Mary’s Station, as well as a special equipment vehicle from Redbridge were mobilised at 2pm, with the stop messaging coming through at 3.20pm.

‘Crews extricated two people from the vehicles and handed them to the South Central Ambulance Service.’
