Police were at the incident, along with two support vehicles from South Central Ambulance Service and other medics.

Colas workers for Portsmouth City Council helped shut the access.

The stretch was shut for nearly three hours but lanes two and three reopened at around 12.50pm.

Rebecca Hayter, whose home backs onto the motorway, said: ‘There was only one loud noise... and then loads of debris in the air, did not hear any squealing brakes, just the one bang.

‘Our prayers are with all involved.’

A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘We are currently attending a serious collision, and the M275 northbound has been closed.’

At 10.30am roads policing officers posted on Twitter and said: ‘M275 closed completely northbound for scene protection. Serious collision.

‘Please use other routes out of Portsmouth.’

They added: ‘M275 north will remain closed whilst evidence is secured and road is made safe. All partners now on scene working. Please use alternative route out of Portsmouth.’

On its website Highways England said: ‘The M275 in Hampshire is closed northbound between the A3 and J1 due to a serious collision which occurred shortly before 10am this morning.

‘Air ambulance attended the scene along with Hampshire police, South Central Ambulance Service and Highways england traffic officers. Hampshire police will be carrying out collision investigation work.

‘Once complete, vehicle recovery and clear-up work can commence. Please note, Hampshire police have also closed the A3 back to Church Street roundabout and diverting traffic on to local roads.’
