Police investigate serious assault and crash on M3 which left man fighting for life

A man is fighting for his life in hospital after another man was attacked on an M3 slip-road in Hampshire.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident which closed part of the motorway for about seven hours on Saturday.

Officers said a man was seriously assaulted on the carriageway of the northbound slip-road at junction 11 at Winchester shortly after 4pm.

The 59-year-old, from Southampton, fled the scene to avoid further injury and was taken to Southampton General Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

He has since been discharged after treatment.

The suspect, a 21-year-old man from Winchester, was seen on the hatched markings and was involved in a collision with a vehicle after the assault.

He was taken to Southampton General Hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The motorway was closed until 11.30pm while officers investigated the incident.

Police are keen to speak with anyone who was on the M3 at the time and might have information, or dash cam footage, which could help the investigation.
