Portsmouth motorists face disruption due to A27 repair works

A SECTION of the A27 near Portsmouth will be closed over two weekends for repair works – and have roadworks for most of the rest of the year.

The Havant bypass was built in 1968 but now needs maintenance to replace the bridge joints as well as the waterproofing and resurfacing of both the east and westbound carriageways.

The central reservation where the bridge crosses the railway line will also need to be replaced.

With work scheduled to commence in mid-September, Highways England is warning about potential disruption due to road closures.

The repair works, which are expected to run until December 2020, will be carried out in two phases.

The first stage will involve two full weekend road closures of the carriageway over the bridge which will be followed by 10 weeks of narrow lanes and a speed restriction of 50mph.

Weekend closures have been confirmed on the eastbound carriageway from 9pm Friday, September 18 to 6am on Monday, September 21. Closure of the westbound carriageway at the same times will take place on the weekend of Friday, September 25 to Monday, September 28.

Highways England has also warned of overnight closures between 9pm and 6am with motorists advised to look out for information on specific dates via road signs and social media.
