Woman cut free from damaged BMW after collision closes Goldsmith Avenue in Southsea

A DRIVER has had to be cut free from her damaged BMW following a road traffic incident that closed a road in central Portsmouth earlier today.

Fire crews from Southsea and Havant stations were called out to the incident at the traffic light controlled junction of Goldsmith Avenue and Winter Road at 3.40pm.

An eye witness said a BMW and a van suffered ‘a very serious’ collision at the junction, with police and ambulance crews also attending the scene.

Fire fighters used a combination of dedicated metal cutters and saws to recuse a woman from the BMW damaged in the incident, according to firefighter Andy Weeks.

Firefighter Andy Weeks said: ‘We attended a road traffic incident at Goldsmith Avenue in order to cut a woman out of a (BMW).

‘We were down there for about an hour and we had to remove the roof of the vehicle.’

‘We handed the driver over to the South Central Ambulance Service for treatment.’

Police closed the western lane of Goldsmith Avenue west of Winter Road, which was also closed as officers worked to extract the BMW.

Officers were still waiting to remove the vehicle as of 5.15pm, according to Firefighter Weeks.

He added: ‘It was quite busy – there was a lot of traffic.’
