Portsmouth to Andover: Trio to set off on 46-mile walk to raise money for cancer charity in memory of late father

The trio will walk from Portsmouth to Andover

A trio of fundraisers will undertake an epic walk from their home in Portsmouth to their childhood home in Andover to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Katie Kercher and Kerry Quick will be accompanied by Katie’s husband Chris Kercher in the fundraising walk, which is being held in the memory of their father Keith, who died of lung cancer 12 years ago.

“We are doing the charity walk on September 1, setting off from Portsmouth to Andover, stopping in Winchester overnight,” said Chris.

“We all three of us have got our own disabilities,” he said, but that will not stop them from pursuing their 46-mile challenge.

“At the moment we are doing training walks to get our bodies used to walking. We’ve been all around Portsmouth and the two girls dress in silly outfits, with wigs and all sorts to raise money,” he said.

Katie and Kerry raised £1,400 last year for Alfie’s Arc by walking every day for a month in Leigh Park, but this year wanted to go one step - or a few thousand steps - further to raise money.

“Hot weather we are dreading,” said Chris. “But, we have been walking through the heatwave, drinking bottle of water after bottle of water!”

On the walk, they will wear T-shirts printed with a photo of their father Keith on, as well as other friends and relatives, but they will also carry markers so people can add names of their loved ones who also have had cancer battles.

“We’re doing this so we can walk for those people too,” said Chris. “We are going to spread some wildflowers along the way in memory of them too.”

They have already made great successes raising money on their training walks. Chris said: “The other day, we cut up by the registry office and there was about six Hampshire Constabulary police officers there and four of them donated using the QR code on the front of the trolley we have been pushing.”
