Warsash Sea Cadets presented with award after being named top unit

The Canada Trophy was presented to the cadets at the Warsash Maritime Academy after they were named the top unit in the Sea Cadet Corps.

The accolade is awarded each year to the unit which is considered to have attained the highest standard of all-round efficiency in the previous year.

Founder of the Warsash unit Steven Selmes said: ‘It’s excellent – 10 years of hard work and now we are the top of the country.

‘Most units are between 20 and 50 years old and have never come close to this, and we have managed to do it in under 10 years.

‘We have such brilliant cadets here and such brilliant staff.

‘When we found out we had won the award we were numb to be honest – only after it sunk in we realised what a massive achievement this is.

‘It has been an amazing night and very well deserved.’

Guests who attended the ceremony included deputy lord lieutenant, Mrs Joan Ferrer, Fareham Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Mike Ford and Mrs Anne Ford, and executive leader of Fareham Council Sean Woodward.

Cllr Ford said: ‘It is lovely for us because we live in Warsash so it has a particular significance to us.

‘It is wonderful to see they have won this award.’

TS Tormentor is based at the Warsash Maritime Academy and has 70 cadets – supported by uniformed and non-uniformed volunteer staff working in a variety of instructional and support roles.

The Maritime Academy participated in many events last year, such as planting ceramic poppies for the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red art installation of poppies at the Tower of London.

Warsash councillor Trevor Cartwright was also at last night’s event.

He said: ‘It’s fantastic they’re doing such a tremendous job, to win this amazing award in such a short space of time is absolutely delightful.’
